I my previous post I inserted some traditional Roman Catholic prayers for purity. In another post later I will insert some traditional Eastern Catholic prayers oriented toward purity. I would be remiss not to point out that it is the Word of God as such that liberates from sin. While growth in abstinence from sexual sin does involve natural virtue, Christian chastity is dependent upon grace. Christian chastity is not mere abstinence from sin, but a way of self-sacrifical love based in the truth of the dignity and goodness of every human person. This love is received as grace from God in and through the heart of Christ. It goes the way of faith, sacrament, mortification, and prayer.
It is Christ who teaches us what it means to love, how to love, and gives us the freedom to love in Him. Yet not without us!
To explore this theme more fully, and particularly to address the obstacles to Christian chastity from a spiritual and moral perspective, these prayers for purity are the beginning of a series on purity of heart and Christian chastity.
